Revisiting Romantic period music / Revisitando la música del Romanticismo

Once Romanticism unit is finished, we tackle the connection of this period with contemporary music.
One of the most representative musical forms is the lied written for voice and piano, which was the preferred instrument of the Romantic period. This combination has never gone out of style and it resulted in a genre known as piano rock. We have to mention artists who usually sing and play the piano at the same time such as Carole King, Elton John, Billy Joel, Tori Amos, Alicia Keys, John Legend, and, on the other hand, we have to quote some lied-style songs such as "Imagine" by John Lennon, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon & Garfunkel, "My Immortal" by Evancescence or "Someone Like You" by Adele.

Una de la formas musicales más representativas es el lied escrito para voz y piano, que era el instrumento preferido del periodo romántico. Esta combinación nunca ha pasado de moda y dio lugar a un género conocido como piano rock. Hemos de mencionar a artistas que suelen cantar acompañándose con el piano como Carole King, Elton John, Billy Joel, Tori Amos, Alicia Keys, John Legend, y por otra parte hemos de citar algunas canciones al estilo lied como "Imagine" de John Lennon, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" de Simon & Garfunkel, "My Inmortal" de Evancescence o "Someone Like You" de Adele.

The 19th century saw the birth of saxophone, initially conceived for military bands, but later on it became a staple instrument in jazz and popular music due to its versatility and expressive possibilities. Its use goes from the usual brass sections in the early days of rock 'n' roll, as well as in soul, funk and disco music, to the almost ubiquitous sax solos in pop and rock of the 80's. After that the instrument fell out of fashion during the 90's and the first decade of 2000's. However, there are exceptions especially in genres such as ska, house or EDM in which it has been, and continues to be, rescued, synthesized or sampled often for nostalgic reasons.

El siglo XIX vio nacer al saxofón, inicialmente concebido para bandas militares, pero más tarde se convirtió en un instrumento básico en el jazz y la música popular por su versatilidad y sus posibilidades expresivas. Su uso va desde las secciones de metales tan habituales en los inicios del rock 'n' roll, así como en el soul, el funk y la música disco, hasta los casi omnipresentes solos de saxo en el pop y el rock de los 80. We have also learned that during this period musical Nationalism arose, that connected classical music with traditional music from atypical regions until then in this area. Popular music has also sought inspiration in folklore resulting in folk music and all its subgenres such as folk rock, folk metal, indie folk, folktronica, etc.

También hemos aprendido que durante este periodo surgió el nacionalismo musical, que conectó música clásica con música tradicional de regiones atípicas hasta entonces en este ámbito. La música popular también ha buscado inspiración en el folklore dando lugar a la música folk y todos sus subgéneros como folk rock, folk metal, indie folk, folktrónica, etc.
